Wow, genuine curiosity is met with violence, cool

I am not an art piece to be dissected. I’m a human being.

Nobody is dissecting you, this question is just meant to get a better understanding of your cultural background.

I personally don’t care when people ask the question only because in Hawaii, it’s a normal thing to ask because society runs differently but it isn’t the same in the United States. I do not like when I’m in the United States and people ask me this question because it comes with a lot of undertones. Plus, it’s really rude to ask someone that question just because you see their face and you don’t even know them? Like?? Why?? Not only that, for mixed individuals I think it also starts getting into another territory that it is slightly different than the “Where are you from/What are you?” that mono-racial individuals receive.

A lot of people don’t like being asked this question. Stop asking it. Stop believing you deserve a response to the question. And I highly doubt that you would understand much even if they did tell you what they were.

I argue people that ask this don’t want a better understanding of a random person’s cultural background as much as they want to categorize and evaluate someone’s worth based on their upbringing.

And nothing was “met with violence”– this is literally words on a gifset. Please stop perpetuating the idea of a black person’s mere existence as violent.

⬆⬆⬆

also wypipo’s sense of entitlement is so complete and thorough that saying “hey don’t do that really offensive thing” is seen as ‘violence’

Literally “What are you?” is often asked before knowing someone’s name.  That’s because people are trying to figure out how to treat you in the racial hierarchy.  As I end up appearing like I could be MANY different ethnicities, I’ve seen people do a 180 in how they treat me based on finding out their previous assumption was wrong.

“What are you?” is violent because it’s basically asking “How much should I get to abuse you?”

If you know me well enough to ask that question, you’d already know the answer.

It happens to everyone as they grow up. You find out who you are and what you want, and then you realize that people you’ve known forever don’t see things the way you do. So you keep the wonderful memories, but find yourself moving on.
